Repositioning a 160-year-old architectural icon for a modern era, The Hamilton Hotel presented a unique spatial challenge. With a long, narrow floor plan bisected by a main thoroughfare, we had to be intentional about how we connected the site's distinct spaces. To maintain visual connection, we kept the foundational finishes – the floors, ceilings and walls – consistent across the entire footprint. To further bridge the two sides, we introduced custom-designed, locally made brass wall lights that act as an distinctive, unifying feature. From there, we layered the personality back in, creating a relaxed, high-energy vibe in the Bar while giving the Bistro a more refined, upmarket feel. Bespoke furniture settings were designed throughout the venue, creating a versatile range of seating options that accommodate different guest experiences.

The expansive site is designed for discovery. A private dining space reveals its own distinct personality, defined by warm, inviting pinks. Within the public bar space is a hidden private room; saturated in vibrant chartreuse and clad with ceiling mirrors, it immerses guests in an exciting, intimate environment. Working closely with our sister studio, Daymark, we drew from their brand strategy to make sure the hotel's new identity was embedded in the interior architecture. We introduced the brand’s high-contrast palette predominantly through the upholstery, pairing rich burgundies and cobalt blues with vibrant pinks and striking pops of chartreuse. The result is a memorable, modern hospitality experience that breathes fresh life into a beloved local landmark, honoring both its historic roots and its strong connection to the brand-new Waikato Regional Theatre.
